Chapter Ten
Exploration
Carlotta was already gone, presumably back to her duties greeting visitors at the lift, when Dare woke up early the next morning with Enellia to check on Nolan.
He played with his son for a while as she gathered food for breakfast. Lily and Koru woke up soon after and joined him, playing tag and other games with the baby as he bumbled his way across the field, giggling.
âAre we heading north right away?â Lily asked as Koru held Nolan overhead and simulated flying, making buzzing noises as the baby shouted gleefully and flapped his wings, which had the same striking patterns as his mother, except in sunset colors.
âAfter breakfast,â Dare agreed. âHopefully we can return when everything settles down, and even bring the rest of the family, but for now we've got things to do.â
She nodded with a sigh, long ears drooping. âI really hope this is all worrying over nothing.â
He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead. âMe too. But we'll be ready just in case.â
Enellia flew back with a bag full of fresh picked fruits and vegetables, and they all settled down to eat. Dare helped mash some berries and mix them with fresh nectar for Nolan, who had a great time making a mess of the food while hopefully getting some into his tummy.
After a few minutes Maril came tottering to join them from another of the secluded hedge rooms. She was noticeably walking bowlegged, hair plastered limply to her forehead and a positively goofy smile on her face.
âSleep well?â Dare asked, trying not to grin as she gingerly lowered herself onto the grass beside Lily.
âNot a wink,â she said with that same slightly glassy look of pure bliss.
They were all trying not to grin now. âWhere's Leon?â Enellia asked innocently.
âStill sleeping.â The tall, athletic ranger blushed and giggled. âSorry, I think I kind of broke him.â
Lily laughed and wrapped an arm around her. âWhat do I always say? The reserved ones are always the most wild. Kind of like me, eh Dare?â
He choked on a sip of nectar at that, then laughed. âYou're reserved?â he teased.
âFor a bunny girl, absolutely,â she said cheerfully. âThat's why our first time was so wild . . . years of pent up fantasies to fulfill.â
Maril squeaked in embarrassment and reached for a cucumber. Then, with another dazed little giggle, she changed her mind and grabbed a tomato instead.
âSo I suppose you'll be leaving now?â Enellia asked a bit sadly as they finished breakfast and Koru began casting a portal back to Marogin, where they'd take the main road north to the next big town.
Dare nodded and wrapped his arms around her from behind, watching Nolan play in the grass. âI wish we could stay longer. We'll try to visit as often as we can, and maybe even bring Nolan's brothers and sisters if possible. And you're welcome to come back to Phoenix Manor with us when it's safer.â
She brightened. âI would love to see Eloise. Especially once her flower blooms and she can talk to us.
